Post-doctoral research associates

Improving our understanding of NWA phytoplankton and their response to climate change

We are recruiting post-doctoral fellows to work on the NWA BCP project at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. We seek personnel to work on the following project:

Developing new approaches to modeling NWA microbial biogeography to improve climate projections. Projects will employ computationally-intensive statistical analyses of ocean data to improve our understanding of the biogeography of NWA phytoplankton and characterize their environmental niches.

Detailed projects will be developed in collaboration with each successful applicant. Researchers will be given exposure to interdisciplinary research and the opportunity to develop skills in a variety of areas including: statistical analyses, bioinformatics, modelling, and laboratory work.

Ideally applicants will have an interest in, expertise or familiarity with one or more of the following: marine ecological modeling, computationally-intensive statistics, machine learning, phytoplankton ecology, or biological oceanography.

Students and post-doctoral fellows are to be located at Dalhousie University in the Mathematics & Statistics department to work with Dr. Zoe Finkel and Dr. Andrew Irwin. There will be opportunities to interact with collaborating groups at Dalhousie and Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have a PhD in statistics, applied mathematics, oceanography, or a related discipline. Our projects are interdisciplinary and provide opportunities to develop new skills and application areas. Prospective lab members should have experience in one of: statistical data analysis, marine ecological modelling, or bioogical oceanography. All applicants should be motivated by problems in biological oceanography and biogeochemistry.

We also have opportunities for extraordinary graduate students in the lab.

About the location:

Dalhousie University is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Halifax has about 400,000 residents including many international students and immigrants to Canada. Dalhousie has about 20,000 students and is a major centre for ocean research in Canada. Faculty from many departments, including Oceanography, Earth Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry, Engineering, and Statistics conduct research into questions relevant to oceans. The Department of Oceanography has more than 20 faculty with diverse research interests and supports more than 40 graduate students. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has more than 25 faculty and 40 graduate students.

Our lab recognizes the value of diversity and hosts researchers with a wide variety of cultural and educational backgrounds. The university is committed to fostering diversity and ensuring a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive community. The university encourages applications from Aboriginal people, persons with a disability, racially visible persons, women, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our community.
